  • Audio pornography?
  • Does music steal your sense of humanity?
  • Are you going to hell if you like music?
  • Is music nothing but sex, drugs and rock’n’roll?

Music has always had the power to evoke strong emotions, and has often strong ties to religious and moral beliefs.

Within both Christianity and Islam, certain forms of music have historical traditions in worship, while others have been discouraged in various ways. Although people sometimes evaluate music strictly on religious grounds, more general criteria might be more common, such as esthetic preferences, appropriateness to a situation, or “do I want my children to listen to this?”.

“Is music sinful?” presents discussions on the relationship of music to religious and moral beliefs – both in the past and in contemporary society. Satanic fiddles, blasphemic drums and devilish Rock ‘n Roll meet heavenly harps and angelic choirs – with historical examples put into relief through the lens of modern Christian and Islamic social media.

The exhibition is situated at Ringve museum in Trondheim, Norway from May 18th – September 25th, 2011, but readers all over the world are invited to give their own comments about “Is music sinful?”: Yes / No / It’s complicated.

  1. I think that music is not sinful, but sometimes I must admit that if it incites people to do bad or stupid stuff, it surely isn’t a socially good.
But on the other hand there’s tv that incites people to do the same thing, so it shouldn’t be a big deal… lol

  2. is music sinful? i’m not religious, or anything. but thinking music is any form of sin is just stupid. music will always be part of any person’s life. if music is a sin, then are we not all sinners?

  4. Something can be “sinful” or “saint” just for the point of view of the person who has certain beliefs and points of view.
Titling this exhibition “is music sinful?” buys into the mindframe of religion and sees the world from that point of view, instead of viewing the things as a non-biased observer.

AbduAllah skriver:

  8. People’s reactions to music can be sinful, music itself is not sinful. Freddie’s face is sinful.

    • I totally agree, any perception of sinfulness is just an individuals reaction, and reflects on their personal beliefs not on the actual music. There is no such thing as ‘evil’ in the world, its just your interpretation.. evil comes from inside people not from external sources.

  10. Do you people have a facebook fan page for ER MUSIKK SYNDIG? | Ringve Museum? I searched for 1 on the internet but could not come across one, I’d really like to become a fan!

    • Hi, Lenore!
We haven’t a facebook page for this exhibition (yet). It is a good idea and we definitely will consider it! I will let you know what we decide.

Ps. I guess you have noticed that Ringve Museum has a fan page on Facebook? You are very welcome to join!
